Passenger Assistance Technician  "P A T"

This is a 8 hour course which covers situations a PAT might encounter on the job.
The course is broken into 3 objectives:

Objective 1 - Cognitive Objectives
Provide for safety of self and patient
Discuss the importance of body substance isolation (BSI)
Describe the steps the attendant should take for personal protection from airborne and
bloodborne pathogens
Discuss communicable diseases and sanitation of vehicles
Identify the presence of hazardous materials and describe how best to approach a
hazardous situation
Discuss human anatomy and the importance of special considerations when moving patients
Discuss methods of reducing stress in self and patient
Recognize a medical emergency
Discuss access to the 911 emergency system
Recognizing the special needs of child patients.  Discuss child safety seats for patients and
passengers
Discuss safe driving techniques
Become proficient with patient assistance, sensitivity and emergency evacuation techniques

Objective 2 - Affective Objectives
Explain the rationale:
For use of appropriate safety equipment
For BSI
For properly lifting and moving patients
For proficiency in emergency evacuation of patients
For calling for additional assistance

Objective 3 - Psychomotor Objectives
Demonstrate:
Use of body mechanics in assisting patients
Use of body mechanics when lifting and moving patients
Assisting patient with clothing and readying patient for transport
Assisting patient from a chair to wheelchair
Securing patient in a wheelchair
Moving wheelchair with the patient
Moving wheelchair with the patient using a ramp and/or a lift
The use of manual backup for lifts
Properly securing the wheelchair in the vehicle
Moving patient in wheelchair up and down stairs
A two person move of wheelchair with patient up and down stairs and ramp
